Hitchin and Harpenden Labour Party Hitchin and Harpenden Labour Party news, contact details, information and events
We are really pleased to announce that we have a special guest speaker, Labour peer Lord Andrew Adonis, who will be joining us at Walsworth Community Centre on Friday 6th September from 19:30 onwards. The whole evening will be dedicated to our speaker and a Q&A session.
The event is listed on both Labour Events (https://events.labour.org.uk/event/279077) and our closed Facebook group.
We will run this in a similar way to the Keir Starmer event we held last year. It is open to all members of our constituency party, and you may bring one additional non-member person if you confirm beforehand. We’ll also invite members in neighbouring constituencies to join us.
Andrew has been a big noise in the People’s Vote campaign. He is visiting us as part of his “Stop Boris, Stop Brexit” campaign. So he will be talking to us about that and there will be a Q&A afterwards where you can ask him questions.
Of course Brexit isn’t the only area of interest for Andrew. He was, or is:
– A key figure in the New Labour project
– Secretary of State for Transport under Gordon Brown. Bought the failing East Coast Main Line into public ownership and made it a success under the East Coast franchise (before the Tories privatised it again as Virgin, and then had to renationalise after went wrong it to create LNER)
– A really keen train fan, reputedly the only person who became Secretary of State for Transport who actually wanted the job !
– Minister of State for Education where he pioneered the Academies schools programme
– A key figure in the New Labour project
– A key figure in the negotiations with the LibDems after the 2010 election- he wrote a book “5 days in May” talking about the progress
– Active in the SDP and then LibDems before joining Labour in the 1990s
Of course not all of you may agree with Andrew’s Brexit approach and you are welcome to question him about this or anything else in the Q&A. You can get a good idea of what Andrew’s politics are by following him on his twitter handle @Andrew_Adonis.
This is being arranged as part of a series of events by Labour Remain, but please understand that in this constituency we are very keen to have speakers from across the spectrum of the party- so if you have further suggestions or contacts for events please get in touch. If the names are big enough, we can do special events- otherwise it can be arranged for branch meetings or CLP meetings.
Please also bring along your loose change as we will be having a collection. We raised £300 at the Keir Starmer event which was used for local campaigning in this constituency.
